Magnitude 5.9 Earthquake Rocks Northern Iran
The Iran Seismological Center reports a magnitude 5.9 earthquake has struck northern Iran. The seismic shift was felt in the capital city of Tehran. This is the third earthquake measuring 5.7 or higher on the Richter scale to hit Iran since mid-July. The center of the earthquake was based near Damghan in in a sparsely populated area with only three known reported. When earthquakes rock rural Iran, the potential for casualties typically remain high due to poor infrastructure. The earthquake that shook the ancient city of Bam in 2003 that killed nearly 27,000 and injured over 30,000 more.
In the coming weeks, View from Damavand will be providing you with an exclusive audio interview with a seismology expert discussing the potential for a catastrophic earthquake in Tehran.
